The Apron ‘Beneath the Skin’

A touring group exhibition

The Apron ‘Beneath the Skin’ is a collaborative project with a focus on the Apron as the garment that changes the identity of the wearer.  This exhibition will include works that look at the past as well as the future of the apron and suppression of identity, in particular of women, by combining historical and cultural aprons with contemporary works by individual artists telling their stories through materiality in art.  The Apron ‘Beneath the Skin’ is coordinated by exhibiting artist, Heinke J. Butt.

Statement “Exploring concepts of cultural heritage my apron is comprised of hundreds of recycled tea bags sewn on a vintage treadle sewing machine featuring original printed imagery referencing domestic scenes and objects, romantic notions of simpler times and reflecting the comfort and security found within the home.  Not only a uniform or representing the individuals fashion choice the Apron suggests what the wearer expects to need protection from.  Although intrinsically suggesting a fragile material the Tea Bag has a strength and resilience as witnessed by its provenance that belies that delicate nature.”

Exhibition dates for 2014:

6 to 16 Sept – Brisbane Institute of Art, Metcalf Gallery
18 Nov to 17 Dec – Gympie Regional Gallery
